Safaricom finally updates their data bundles to include Free WhatsApp.

Safaricom have finally updated their data bundle plans to include free WhatsApp in a move aimed at ensuring they maintain their lead in the Kenyan telecommunications sector.
The bundles have also been revamped to include new options and pricing with some data plans made more affordable and enticing. For example, you can now get Daily 500 MBS for just Ksh.99, an option which was absent in the previous bundle plans. Also, instead of spending Ksh.1000 for the monthly 2 GB data, you can now get the same for half the price. (Ksh.500).
  • The free WhatsApp only kicks in once you exhaust the purchased data.
  • It's validity is the same as that of the purchased data.
  • You can use the free WhatsApp up to 500 MB within the validity period.
  • The free WhatsApp speeds are reduced, and you cannot use it for voice or video calls.

How to purchase Safaricom data
You can buy the data using USSD *544# and select a plan of your choice, or on my Safaricom app go to data and SMS plans.
All Safaricom platinum plans also now have the free WhatsApp which is valid till the end of the validity period of the bundle purchased, and is active even if data runs out.
 Free WhatsApp was first implemented by Airtel Kenya and then followed by Telkom Kenya.

The introduction of almost similar service by Safaricom looks like they finally bowed to pressure from Telkom, with many Kenyans now using Telkom data. According to an article by the star,over 12 million Kenyans use WhatsApp monthly, a number that no business minded person should ignore.
