How to reverse wrong Mpesa transaction

Every so often you might end up sending cash to some unintended individual or a wrong number through Safaricom M-PESA. This could be a very frustrating situation, especially if it's a significant amount of money that was to be used for an urgent important purpose.

While this could not be a 100% sure, there's a good chance that you could get your money back, and below we have highlighted a number of steps you can take to get your Mpesa reversal.

M-Pesa is Africa's biggest versatile cash transfer platform which began in Kenya in 2007 by Vodafone in association with Safaricom. It is now accessible in various nations across Africa and outside Africa.

The platform permits it's clients send and get cash from other M-Pesa clients, send and withdraw cash from accomplice banks as well as pay for goods and services through the Lipa Na M-Pesa platform.

With around 1,200 M-Pesa transactions carried out every second, quite possibly's a portion of those transactions could land in some wrong numbers, a test that M-Pesa needed from the onset to figure out how to encounter this issue.

In case you send money to a wrong recipient there are a number of ways to reverse your money including:

  • Sending the wrong Mpesa transaction message to 456.
  • Calling the wrong recipient to inform them of the wrong transaction.
  • Visiting an Mpesa agent or Safaricom shop near you.
  • Calling Safaricom care.

There are a couple of manners by which you can invert the exchanges when they occur, and a decent opportunity to get your cash back.

It is anyway not have the option to be turned around assuming that some unacceptable individual getting the cash has previously removed the cash by the you the time you switch the exchange.

1. Send the Mpesa transaction message or sms to 456

Immediately you realize you have send money to a wrong number, the first thing to do is send the wrong transaction message to 456.

Safaricom will make an immediate follow up on the transaction and get back within a few minutes to inform you about the reversal process.

This usually involves Safaricom calling the wrong money recipient to inform them of the wrong transfer and that they (Safaricom) have been informed by the sender to effect the reversal.

If the recipient has not used or withdrawn the money, then you will get your money back within a few minutes or hours, but if the money have been already withdrawned or used then you have a nother problem and you might need to involve the police.

2. Call the recipient and inform them of the wrong transfer.

Please note that despite having sent the money to a wrong number, the person to blame for such a transaction is you, since the money was your and you are the one who keyed in the phone number digits.

So the second most prudent step to take after forwarding the wrong transaction message to 456 is to call the recipient and inform them to kindly reverse the money.

Many will cooperate with you and Safaricom until the money have been successfully reversed.

3. Visit a nearby Mpesa agent or Safaricom Shop near you.

In case you have take the first two steps and still feel the progress is not fast or good enough, then you can visit a Safaricom Shop near you for further assistance. This is quite a critical step especially if the money involved is a good amount of money and or the wrong recipient is not cooperating or if the number is off.

4. Call Safaricom customer care on 100 to inform them of the wrong transaction.

If you can't immediately visit a Safaricom shop, then kindly call Safaricom care and inform them of the wrong transaction. Please note that you should first forward the transaction message to 456 before calling customer care and you should not delete the sms until you get your money back.

Please note that despite following all these steps, there's a chance that you might not get your money back, especially if the recipient is not willing to cooperate with you.

In such situations Safaricom will advice you to report the matter to the nearest police station for further assistance.

Please note that Safaricom does not take responsibility for a wrong Mpesa transaction since it always gives you a window of around 25 seconds to confirm the details of the recipient through Hakikisha which allows you to right away cancel the transfer if you entered the wrong number.
