Released May 2021, the Vivo V21 5G is one of the affordable 5g smartphones from Vivo with a retail price of approximately Ksh. 43,999. It features a number of promising features with a key to bring the price of the phone as low as possible without compromising on it’s performance, and that’s why Vivo settled for the Mediated Dimensity 800U instead of a Snapdragon processor and used Plastic back and frame instead of a metallic or Glass back. It therefore joins a long list of affordable 5G smartphones including the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G series, the Vivo Y53s, Vivo iQoo7, Nokia X10 and X20 to name just but a few.
The V21 5g features a 6.44 inch AMOLED panel the same size as all Vivo V20 and V21 series phones. It comes with 90Hz refresh rate which is not that bad considering it’s price, though there are a number of similarly priced phones with 120Hz refresh rate. It has a good display resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and with HDR10+ support you will love watching movies and playing games on this device.
Being a 2021 phone it ships with Android 11 atop the Funtouch 11.1 and going by Vivo’s history it could be entitled to an Android 12 update. The key highlight of this phone is the Mediated Dimensity 800U, a 7nm fabricated chipset with a number of improvements including dual standby 5g connectivity and is seen as the processor of choice for affordable 5G phones and a key alternative to the likes of Snapdragon 720G 5g.
Unlike many phones that give you an option to choose between a number of memory variants the V21 5g is available in only two memory variants of 8+128 and 8+256 with an option the expand the storage via an external SD card. You can choose between three color variants of Dusk Blue, Sunset Dazzle and Arctic White.
In the camera department it comes with a total of fou Cameras three in the rear and one in front. The rear cameras are made up of a primary 64MP wide lens, a 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro lens. This is almost the standard camera configuration for phones at this price range though some slot in an extra depth sensor. Many tend to shy away from a telephoto lens at this price because it will drastically increase the price.
In front is a single 44MP selfie camera which has become almost a statement from Vivo that they give a significant focus on their selfie camera performance. The front camera can record up to 4k videos just like the rear cameras
The phone is powered by a non removable 4,000 mAh battery with 33W fast charge that can deliver 60% charge in just 30 minutes.

The phone is not yet available in the country, and considering it’s price of RS. 29,990 in India the Vivo V21 5g is expected to retail at around Ksh. 43,999 for the 8+128GB variant.
In order to sell the phone will have to battle it out with a number of mid-range 5g phones including the Nokia X10, Nokia X20, Vivo Y53s, realme GT, Xiaomi Mi 9 5g series among other affordable 5g smartphones. Most of this phones are not yet available in the country but that could change once Safaricom rolls out 5G connectivity which is currently under commercial piloting.
