Motorola Edge S is a 5G mid-range Smartphone Released February 3rd and is priced at Ksh. 33,000. It was the first phone to feature the Snapdragon 870 5G, a powerful mid-range 5G gaming chipset.
The Edge S has a 6.7 inch IPS LCD panel, the only Snapdragon 870 5G so far with an LCD instead of an AMOLED panel, but apparently one of the most affordable 5G phones.
The display has a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels and an impressive 409ppi aspect ratio. It also Supports 90 Hz refresh rate, HDR10 and is one of the very few phones with a 21:9 aspect ratio.
The Dual-punch hole display houses two selfie cameras with each camera having it’s own punch hole instead of the two of them being housed in a single oval punch hole like in the Tecno Camon 16 Premier. The selfie cameras are a 16MP + a 8MP Ultrawide lens.
At the back are another four Cameras housed in a rectangular module that’s almost square and closely resembles Xiaomi Mi module, but the lenses are quite conspicuous and won’t go unnoticed.
The primary camera is a 64MP lens supported by a 16MP Ultrawide lens, a 2MP depth sensor and a TOF 3D sensor.
The phone can shoot up to 6K videos at 30 frames per second, 4K@30/60fps and 1080P@30fps. This also makes the Motorola Edge S one of the few phones that support 6K video format with many preferring either 4K or 8k for flagships like the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
Measuring 164.8 x 74 x 9.7 mm and weighing 215g, this is quite a bulky phone by every senses of it, being thicker than many phones. Thankfully the 21:9 aspect ratio makes it comfortably fit into your palm, but you will still feel it’s weight and will call for two handed operations most of the time.
It’s fingerprint scanner is placed at the side and still retains the 3.5mm audio jack port that many phones are now getting rid of.
The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 870 5G processor, a 7nm 5G chipset launched by Qualcomm January this year and first featuring on this phone. This is a powerful gaming processor with a top clock-speed of 3.2 GHz and can handle gaming as well as multitasking pretty well. The 6 or 8GB RAM on this phone is more than enough for you and coupled with the 90 Hz refresh rate you will love how the phone responds to your touch and how apps open.
The battery is a 5,000 mAh non removable Li-po and this could be the main reason why the phone is so heavy. Many close Competitors of this phone have batteries below 4,500 mAh. The battery will last you well over a day with a single charge and will greatly safe you the trouble of having to pluck in your phone to the socket every now and then. It comes with a 20W adapter but is not that fast enough compared to the 33W in the Redmi K40 or the 65W in the OnePlus 9R. It will still take you almost one and a half hours to full charge this phone.
