Nokia 8.1 Price In Kenya And Specifications.

Nokia 8.1 specs and price in Kenya

HMD Global has not been as aggressive in launching flagship devices as they have done in the low-mid and budget Smartphone segments probably based on the fact that many the under 35k market is huge in the country compared to other segments.

So far there are a number of Nokia phones available in Kenya including the Most affordable Nokia C1 and C2, the Nokia 2 series and the mid-rangers like the Nokia 6 and 7 series. With the Nokia 9 pureview as the only flagship from the company so far, it leaves the Nokia 8 series at a rather unclear market segment. A fact usually seen when the Nokia 8.1 is confused as being the successor of the 2017 Nokia 8, yet infact it succeds the Nokia 7 Plus.

The Nokia 8.1 features a 6.18 inch IPS LCD display and was among the first phones to support HDR10.  It has a Full HD + display of 1080 x 2280 pixels and an impressive pixel Density of 408 ppi. This is one of the best displays in a Nokia phone and it's HDR10 support is a good addition making this phone ideal for gaming and watching videos.

This is a 2018 phone and it ships with Android 9.0(pie) but thankfully it is upgradable to Android 10 so it will still have an up-to-date OS. The phone has a clean user interface with zero bloatware and ads which is a major plus against phones from other brands. It is also entitled to timely security and software updates something which is a preserve to Android one certified phones only. It powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, a 10nm fabricated chipset that has a top clock-speed of 2.23Ghz which is slightly lower than the 2.4 GHz in the Nokia 8.3.

You can choose between three memory Variants of 4+64 GB, 6+64 or 6+128 GB. This is quite big considering the launch year of this phone. You can choose between five colors of Blue, Silver, Steel, Copper, Iron.

In the camera department the Nokia 8.1 comes with a total of three Cameras, two in the rear and one in front. The rear cameras are made up of a primary 12MP primary camera and a 13MP secondary camera with Zeiss Optics, dual pixel PDAF and OIS image stabilization. The Nokia 8.1 was also among the first phones to support 4k video recording. In front is a single 20MP selfie camera.

The phone is powered by a non removable 3,500 mAh battery with 18W fast charge support.

Design.

The Nokia 8.1 is a beauty to behold, maybe not as trendy as the flagships we have seen from the likes of OnePlus, but just one lok at this device and you conclude that it is not a cheap phone. The build quality and finish detail that Nokia have given this phone is commendable, and every part of this phone looks elegant and we'll thought out, except maybe one or two things here and there.

Measuring 154.8 x 75.8 x 8mm, you won't worry about it's height, but this is quite a wide phone, wider than any Samsung Galaxy S20 phone. Add 180g to that you should feel that you're not holding any phone, but a true premium device. The front of the phone is made of unspecified version of Gorilla Glass, with thin bezels round it and a notch that reminds us that this is a 2018 device. Though Nokia did their best to slim the notch as much as they could, it is still quite conspicuous and somewhat spoils the overall look of the display. Thankfully the display does not extend to the sides of the notch which is largely used for notifications, therefore it won't affect your viewing experience. The notch houses the selfie camera, front LED flash and the proximity sensor.

The back is made out of Glass, giving a smooth slippery feel. It easily slides off desks and you should pay extra attention when holding it, meaning you will have to use a case. The camera module is placed at the top centre just like many Nokia smartphones, but it slightly bulges out making the phone woble when using on a flat surface. This can also scratch the lenses. Below the cameras is a fingerprint scanner and a vertically placed Nokia Logo.

Display.

The Nokia 8.1 has a 6.18 inch display with a full HD+ display of 1080 x 2280 pixels and a pixel density of 408 ppiand an aspect ratio of 19:9. You will definitely enjoy watching videos with this device, and the 500 nits of brightness ensures you get a satisfactory outdoors experience as well. The display is HDR ready, though many reviewers have doubted if this feature really works on this phone.

Cameras.

The phone has just three cameras, one in front and two at the back. At a time when many brands were going at the extremes to bring us that amazing shot, Nokia decided to proof that even just a single lens can still give you good results.

The rear camers are a 12 and a 13 MP lens, and their pictures are quite good. They also shoot videos of  upto 4K@30fps and 1080p@30fps.  The selfie camera is a single 20 MP lens with remarkable results, and can also shoot videos of 1080p@30fps.

Battery.

The major concern we see with many Nokia phones is their rather small battery capacities, and the Nokia 8.1 is no different. To have a 3,500 mAh battery power such a beast is no good, and though we have an 18 W fast charge support it still means the phone will always spend a number of trips to the power socket.

Why buy the Nokia 8.1.

  • Nice look.
  • Good display
  • Powerful Chipset
  • Good cameras

Zawadi is a Swahili term for a gift or to reward. Airtel Zawadi therefore is a loyalty program by Airtel Kenya aimed at rewarding its customers for staying loyal to the brand by using their various products and services .  The service closely resembles Safaricom bonga and Telkom Ziada , both also rewarding customers for using their lines to make calls, browse or send SMS as well as transacting on mpesa.
