Just like many other Nokia devices the Nokia 8.3 is a beautiful piece of hardware with a smooth software to compliment it. Available in only one color, the Polar Night produces a stunning light effect that resembles the Northern lights each time you hold the phone at varying angles to the light. The punch hole design results in a beautiful edge-to-edge display which we wished to have seen in the Nokia 8.2 if not for the notch. Nokia decided to still retain their logo branded chin but is nicely done so that instead of looking like a distraction it compliments the overall look of the device.
The 8.3 measures 171.9 x 78.6 x 9mm and weighing 220 g making it one of the biggest smartphones towering way above most flagship devices. It has the same weight as the Samsung Galaxy S20 ultra but much taller than any S20 phone. It is even bigger than the Note 20 ultra. This is obviously a two handed Smartphone and if you don't like bulky devices then this is not for you.
At the back is the circular camera module that we have associated with Nokia devices and we couldn't hide our dissapointment with Infinix when tried to copy this look with their Note 7. The camera module houses four camera lenses and they are arranged so that it gives a kind of a smiley look.
At the right hand side of the phone is a Sim tray, volume rockers and a power button that has a fingerprint sensor embedded. The dedicated Google Assistant button which is another Nokia associated feature is found at the Left side. At the bottom are the speaker, the USB-C port and the 3.5 mm port. This is one of the very few phones at it's price range that still spots the 3.5 mm port something I consider a plus.
Display.
The Nokia 8.3 has a huge 6.81 inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. This is the first time we're seeing HMD Global give us such a big scree something we have associated with the likes of Xiaomi and Infinix. While many of it's competitors feature an AMOLED display, Nokia decided to retain the IPS LCD panel but with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 386 ppi pixel density. You will definitely have a nice viewing experience on this device.
Cameras.
The phone spots a quad camera setup witth Zeiss Optics. The primary camera is a 64 MP wide lens supported by a 12 MP ultra wide lens, a 2 MP macro and a 2 MP depth sensor. The camera performance is quite good and at bar with the competition. What I like most about Nokia is their ability to give us quality camera performance without including too much unnecessary hardware and software jargon which at the end ruins the overall experience. You can shoot videos upto 4K@30/60fps with gyro-EIS stabilization. There's also a number of video editing tools that you can explore to find out which ones best suits your taste.
The front camera is a single 24 MP wide lens that can also shoot videos of 1080p@30fps.
Software Performance.
The Nokia 8.3 5G continuous Nokia's commitment to Android one program, a much needed option especially for phones at this price range. It Ensure a clean user interface free of any bloatware and unsolicited ads as well as timely software and security updates. The phone ships with Android 10 and we expect it to receive Android 11 update soon.
Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, a 5G optimized system on cheapest first featured on the Vivo X50 Smartphone. It has an Octa-core (1 x 2.4 GHz kyro 475 prime & 1 x 2.2 GHz kyro 475 Gold & 4 x 1.8 GHz kyro 475 Gold) CPU. Other phones with the Chipset are the OnePlus Nord, LG velvet, Oppo Reno3 pro and the Realme X50 5G among others. Since most of these are 5G devices they are not available in the country yet.
Battery.
Unlike many Nokia phones that come with relatively smaller battery capacity, the 8.3 is powered by a 4500 mAh non removable Li-po battery with 18 W fast charge support. Though this is enough to power this giant we feel Nokia should have given us something much more like a 33 W fast charge.
Conclusion.
The Nokia 8.3 is a good 5G phone and what I love about Nokia Phones is their high durability and clean Android interface with no bloatware or pop up ads. The only little sacrifice we will have to content with is the IPS LCD screen instead of an AMOLED display.
